Ford Transit P0521 & P06DD Oil Pressure Faults

P0521 and P06DD are common fault codes found on the Ford 2.0 EcoBlue engine. They usually indicate a problem with how the oil pressure is being measured or controlled. P0521 relates to the oil pressure sensor reading being out of its expected range, while P06DD points to the variable displacement oil pump failing to switch between high and low pressure modes.

On the EcoBlue engine, these codes are often a warning of a serious mechanical issue. The internal 'wet' timing belt can degrade over time, shedding rubber particles into the engine oil. This debris eventually clogs the oil pump strainer, restricting the flow of oil and triggering the ECU to record these specific codes. Ignoring them can lead to total engine seizure.

Common causes

The most frequent cause of these codes is a blocked oil pump pick-up pipe caused by rubber debris from a perishing wet belt. This is common in vans that have missed service intervals or used the incorrect oil grade.

Other causes include a failing variable displacement oil pump, a faulty oil pressure sensor, or a break in the wiring loom. In some cases, a high-pressure oil pump solenoid failure will cause the P06DD code to appear even if the belt is intact.

How we diagnose it

We begin by checking live engine data to see how the oil pressure behaves under load. If the readings are inconsistent, we do not simply replace the sensor. Instead, we typically remove the oil sump to inspect the pump strainer for physical blockages.

This is the only way to confirm if the timing belt is breaking down. If we find rubber debris, we recommend a full wet belt replacement and a thorough cleaning of the oil system to prevent damage to the turbocharger and engine bearings.
