Ford Transit Oil Light On or Flashing

When the red oil pressure light appears on your Ford Transit or Transit Custom 2.0 EcoBlue, it means the engine is not receiving enough lubrication. This is a critical warning that requires you to stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.

In these engines, a common cause of low oil pressure is a degrading wet belt. As the belt wears, rubber particles drop into the engine oil and block the oil pump strainer. This starves the engine of oil, leading to failure of the turbocharger and internal engine components.

Continuing to drive with the oil light on, even if the engine sounds normal, will likely result in a seized engine and a significantly higher repair bill. Professional diagnosis is necessary to identify if the oil pickup is restricted.

Common causes

The most frequent cause on the 2.0 EcoBlue engine is the degradation of the wet belt (timing belt). Rubber debris from a wearing belt settles in the sump and clogs the oil pump pickup strainer.

Oil dilution is another factor. If the van is used for short trips, diesel can leak into the oil during failed DPF regenerations, thinning the oil and reducing its ability to maintain pressure.

Mechanical failure of the oil pump itself or a faulty oil pressure sensor can also trigger the light, though these are less common than belt-related blockages.

What you should do

If the oil light comes on while driving, pull over safely and turn off the engine immediately. Do not attempt to 'limp' the vehicle home or to a garage, as this often causes terminal engine damage within minutes.

Check the engine oil level using the dipstick. If the level is low, top it up, but if the light remains on after restarting, shut the engine down again. If the level is high, the oil may be diluted with diesel.
