Ford Transit Low Oil Pressure Warning

A low oil pressure warning on a Ford 2.0 EcoBlue engine is a critical alert that requires immediate attention. Unlike a service light, this message indicates that the engine is not receiving sufficient lubrication to protect its internal moving parts.

The most common cause we see at our Copthorne workshop is a blocked oil pump strainer. This happens when the internal timing belt (wet belt) begins to perish, dropping rubber debris into the oil sump which then clogs the pickup pipe.

If this warning appears while driving, you should pull over and stop the engine as soon as it is safe to do so. Running the engine without adequate oil pressure can cause terminal internal damage in a matter of seconds.

Common causes

The primary cause is typically the degradation of the wet belt. As the belt breaks down, rubber particles collect in the sump and block the oil pickup strainer, starving the engine of oil.

A faulty oil pressure switch or sensor can sometimes trigger a false warning, though this is less common than a physical blockage on the EcoBlue engine.

Using engine oil that does not meet the exact Ford specification can cause the belt to swell and deteriorate prematurely, leading to a loss of pressure.
