Winter Van Maintenance Checklist for Transit Owners

22 Oct 2025 7 min read

Winter is the toughest season for a working van. Cold starts, salt, damp and long dark hours all take their toll. A little preparation now prevents the most common cold-weather breakdowns — here is our practical checklist for Ford Transit owners.

Battery and charging

Cold weather dramatically increases the load on a battery while reducing its capacity. Have the battery and charging system tested before winter — a battery that struggled in autumn will often fail on the first frosty morning.

Glow plugs and cold starting

Diesel engines rely on glow plugs to start cleanly in the cold. If your Transit is slow to start, hesitant or smoky first thing, get the glow plugs and starting system checked.

Coolant and antifreeze

Weak coolant can freeze, which can crack components and cause serious damage. We check the antifreeze concentration to make sure it offers proper frost protection and corrosion resistance.

Oil — the EcoBlue priority

Clean, correct-grade oil flows better when cold and protects the wet belt and oil system. If you are due an oil change, winter is a good time to do it. Cold starts are when the oil system works hardest.

Tyres, wipers and visibility

  • Check tyre tread and pressures — grip matters most in the wet and cold.
  • Replace worn wiper blades and top up screen wash with a winter mix.
  • Check all lights are working for the dark mornings and evenings.

Don’t ignore warning lights

Cold weather often brings existing faults to the surface. If an oil, DPF or engine light appears, get it checked promptly rather than hoping it clears — small winter problems become big ones fast.
