DPF Problems on Ford Transit EcoBlue Engines Explained

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is one of the most misunderstood parts of a modern diesel van — and one of the most common sources of warning lights and limp-mode on the Ford 2.0 EcoBlue. Understanding how it works makes it far easier to keep yours healthy.

What the DPF does

The DPF is a filter in the exhaust that traps the soot produced by diesel combustion, stopping it from leaving the tailpipe. Like any filter it gradually fills up — and it has to be cleaned out regularly through a process called regeneration.

What “regeneration” actually means

Regeneration is when the engine deliberately raises the exhaust temperature to burn off the trapped soot, turning it into a small amount of ash. There are two types:

• Passive regeneration happens automatically on longer, faster journeys when the exhaust is naturally hot.
• Active regeneration is triggered by the engine management when soot builds up, injecting extra fuel to heat the DPF.

The problem: if your van only does short, low-speed trips, regeneration never completes — and the DPF slowly blocks.

Signs of a DPF problem

• DPF or engine management warning light.
• Limp mode and reduced power.
• Excessive smoke or a smell of fuel.
• Repeated failed regenerations or a noticeable drop in economy.

What you can do

Where possible, give the van a regular longer run at motorway speed to allow a full regeneration. But if the light is already on or the DPF is heavily blocked, it needs proper diagnosis — sometimes a forced regeneration is enough, sometimes the underlying cause (a faulty sensor, EGR fault or excess soot from another problem) has to be fixed first.

How we approach DPF faults

We never simply clear the code and hand it back. We read live data, test the sensors and EGR, and find the real reason the filter is blocking. That is the only way to stop the problem coming straight back.
